Why Perplexity Cites Your Competitors and Not You
Growthclan Team ·
Perplexity cites your competitors and not you because, when it searches the web for the answer, it finds pages that talk about them and not about you, or it finds your pages but judges them less useful to cite. The problem is almost always in the sources: to fix it you need to know which pages Perplexity uses for your topic and make sure you are in them.
How does Perplexity choose its sources?
Perplexity works as an answer engine: for each question it runs one or more searches, reads a small set of pages and writes a summary with numbered citations. The chosen pages tend to share a few traits:
- they are relevant to the exact question, not just the topic;
- they contain a clear answer that is easy to extract;
- they are readable by its crawler, with no content hidden behind JavaScript;
- they are credible: publications, comparison sites, documentation, communities with real discussions.
If your competitors appear in these pages, they end up in the answer. If you are not there, you stay out, even when your product is better.
What are the most common causes?
1. Your pages don’t answer the question. A product page about “innovative solutions” doesn’t answer “what is the best ERP for a 20-person company?”. A comparison article does.
2. The crawler can’t read you. PerplexityBot blocked in robots.txt or by a bot-protection service, or text that only appears after scripts load.
3. You are not in third-party sources. Choice questions (“best…”, “alternatives to…”) are mostly answered with comparison articles, rankings and reviews. If those only name your competitors, so will Perplexity.
4. Information about you is outdated or contradictory. Old pricing, features or positioning lead to wrong descriptions, or no mention at all.
How do you find the sources that leave you out?
Ask Perplexity your buyers’ questions and note the cited sources. Repeat several times and across several questions: recurring sites will emerge. The sources that appear when competitors are named, but you are not, are your citation opportunities.

How do you get into Perplexity’s answers?
- Fix access. Allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and check that the main content is in the HTML. The full list is in the AEO site audit.
- Create the missing page. For each important question, a page that answers directly, with data and honest comparisons.
- Work on citation opportunities. Offer data or comments to the authors of comparisons, ask to be included with evidence, take part in communities as an expert.
- Align your brand information across site, profiles, directories and reviews.
- Measure again. Perplexity searches in real time, so improvements can show quickly; you still need a repeated set of questions to tell signal from chance.

Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google?
Perplexity runs web searches with its own system and crawlers, such as PerplexityBot, and shows sources as numbered citations. That is why it is worth checking that PerplexityBot is not blocked in your robots.txt.
Can I ask Perplexity to cite me?
No. You can, however, make your pages easier to find and cite, and get mentioned by the sources Perplexity already uses for your topic.
If Perplexity cites me, will other AI engines too?
Not automatically: each engine has its own sources and criteria. The foundations are shared, though, so improvements on one engine tend to help the others.
